cuny asap program

ASAP is a program offered at all cuny COMMUNITY COLLEGES that provides students with extra support. read the paragraphs below to find out more information about it. you might be a great candidate for the program!!

ASAP is a post-admissions process and information from students’ financial aid awards and CUNY Assessment Tests results are required to determine eligibility.  Students who are eligible to apply and complete ASAP admissions steps in a timely manner will have the opportunity to take advantage of a number of benefits available to incoming students over the summer, including the University Skills Immersion Program (USIP) and ASAP early engagement activities. Through ASAP and USIP, students with developmental course needs can enroll during the summer free of charge and can begin to access college support resources.

COST FREE

It takes investment to succeed, and ASAP invests in its students. ASAP provides several incentives to remove financial barriers to full-time college study. Any gap between financial aid award and tuition and fees is waived so there is no cost of attendance for financial-aid eligible students. All students receive monthly New York City MTA Metrocards and free use of textbooks for their classes.

CONNECTED COMMUNITY

ASAP students take the majority of their first-year classes in small, close-knit cohorts of 25 students who move through the program together by major. This connected community helps students develop close and supportive relationships with one another and their instructors. Students also participate in the ASAP Seminar, a weekly non-credit advisement program facilitated by ASAP staff. In year two, students take required classes with some of their fellow ASAP students and the general college population and continue to attend the ASAP Seminar.

FULL-TIME STUDY AND AVAILABLE MAJORS

All ASAP students are required to maintain full-time status (minimum 12 credits per semester) and are strongly encouraged to take classes during winter and summer sessions to accelerate movement towards graduation. ASAP supports most majors that can be completed with in three years. All colleges offer an array of programs leading to the Associate in Arts (A.A.), Associate in Science (A.S.), or Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.).  Available majors are
selected by partner community colleges based on projected job growth in New York City and transferability to four-year colleges.  To view the available majors and degrees, please visit ASAP college websites.

BLOCK SCHEDULE

It can be challenging for community college students to balance a college schedule with the demands of work and family. Each college provides a range of scheduling options designed so that ASAP students can attend classes in a convenient morning, afternoon, or evening block of time that is compatible with their demanding schedules.

COMPREHENSIVE ADVISEMENT

ASAP students receive the mentoring and guidance they need to succeed. An experienced, full-time advisor carefully guides each student's progress, steering students to make wise decisions about how to get the most out of their college experience and to strategically plan for their futures. ASAP advisors meet with students at least twice a month and provide comprehensive academic, social, and interpersonal support. Frequent contact between faculty and advisors ensures that students in need or additional support are referred as early as possible. Should ASAP students choose to pursue further study after completing the Associates degree, the advisor will aid the selection, application and transfer process to an appropriate baccalaureate program.

ACADEMIC SUPPORT SERVICES

Throughout the academic year, skilled tutors are available to give ASAP students an added academic boost and to help them realize their full academic potential. Depending on college, tutors are available both in and out of the classroom and in a wide variety of subjects. Regular interaction between faculty and advisors ensures that students who need additional support are guided to tutoring as early as possible.  Many ASAP programs have dedicated space for homework assistance, study groups, and scheduled review sessions for individual courses.

CAREER COUNSELING

ASAP career and employment specialists are available at each college to help students develop their career goals from day one. ASAP career and employment specialists deliver workshops on interviewing and job skills as part of the ASAP Seminar, assist with creation of resumes and cover letters,  and help students shape long-term goals including consideration of internships and consideration of future study.  Students who require employment are placed in an appropriate job situation to allow them to take a full-time course load. ASAP career and employment specialists work with advisors to provide all students with support in transferring to a 4-year college and/or entering the work force as they near graduation.

Community Colleges

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

5 reasons why Community College may be the best choice for you!

1.    $MONEY$
v  Community college costs a fraction of the total price of a public or private 4-year college.

TOTAL COST OF ATTENDANCE (TUITION, ROOM/BOARD, FEES)
CSI (CITY PUBLIC 4-YR SCHOOL)
SUNY DELHI (STATE PUBLIC 4-YR SCHOOL)
ST. JOHN’S UNIVERSITY (PRIVATE 4-YR SCHOOL)
$11,195
$17,436
$39,035

BMCC TUITION (CITY PUBLIC COMM. COLLEGE)
SUNY ORANGE (STATE PUBLIC COMM. COLLEGE)
BRYANT & STRATTON (PRIVATE COMM. COLLEGE)
$9,551
$9,478
$19,425

2.     WEAK GRADES/TEST SCORES
v  If you don’t have a high enough GPA or test scores for your dream four-year college, it’s okay! Community colleges are open-admissions. You can use  community college to build up your grades and prove what a serious student you are and can be.
v  As a freshman, colleges use your high school grades to *assume* what you would be like as a college student. As a transfer student from a community college, colleges don’t have to *assume,* your college grades do all the work!
v  You start college with a clean slate. You don’t have to worry that you failed English in sophomore year of high school – you can be a whole new student with a whole new attitude!

3.     WORK/FAMILY OBLIGATIONS
v  Four-year colleges don’t usually offer a lot of flexibility in making your schedule. Most community colleges offer evening and weekend classes, for students who have several obligations during the day time.

4.     YOUR CAREER DOESN’T REQUIRE A BACHELOR’S DEGREE
v  Community colleges offer many certification and associate degree programs that you won’t find at most four-year colleges. Many tech and service careers do not require a four-year degree, and you won’t find that specialized training at a four-year college.
v  Example: Automotive Technology, Broadcasting Technology/Management, Microcomputer Systems, Construction Mgmt Technology, Culinary Arts, Dental Hygiene, Digital Design, Digital Music, EMT/Paramedic, Environmental Technology, Fashion Merchandising/Marketing, Game Design, Laser & Fiber Optics Technology, Medical Office Manager, Radiologic Technology, Small Business Entrepreneurship, Sports & Fitness, Veterinary Technology

5.     YOU AREN’T SURE WHAT YOU WANT TO DO!
v  You’re 18 years old and you’re not sure what you want to do with the rest of your life?? BIG SURPRISE!! You are NOT the only one in that position!
v  Use community college as your stepping stone to figure it out. To figure out if college is for you; to figure out what subject you enjoy studying; to figure out what field you want to work in.
